Jacksonville Updates Community on Hurricane Helene Response Efforts

**JACKSONVILLE, Fla.** – Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan announced Friday that Hurricane Helene impacted the city in several ways, including widespread power outages, isolated flooding, and downed trees and powerlines.

"All things considered, we were fortunate compared to the Big Bend, but we did have a tough night," Deegan said during a news conference.

Flooding occurred in expected areas like San Marco, Riverside, and downtown, but it had already begun to recede by Friday morning.

"If you see floodwaters, please don’t drive through them," Deegan urged.

Fortunately, there were no storm-related fatalities.

The mayor stated that the most significant issue was widespread outages caused by downed powerlines and trees. As of 12:39 p.m., JEA reported that 69,528 customers were still without power. Atlantic Beach was hit particularly hard, with a major outage beginning around 10 p.m. Thursday, due to extensive infrastructure damage.

City offices will remain closed Friday, and the Duval County Emergency Operations Center will stay fully activated. Five city shelters will remain open, with the potential for extended availability based on residents’ needs.

Those with medical needs reliant on electricity can call 630-CITY (2489) to arrange shelter transportation, with JTA providing free rides to shelters.

The city will provide another update Friday at 6:05 p.m.
