Barbra Streisand Honors Kris Kristofferson: 'He Was Truly One of a Kind
Barbra Streisand shared a heartfelt tribute to her *A Star Is Born* co-star Kris Kristofferson, who passed away at age 88 on Sept. 28.
Reflecting on their deep friendship and professional bond, Streisand highlighted the qualities that made Kristofferson not only a gifted performer but also a beloved figure in both the music and film industries.
“The first time I saw Kris performing at the Troubadour in L.A., I knew he was something special,” Streisand wrote on social media. “Barefoot and strumming his guitar, he seemed like the perfect fit for a script I was developing, which eventually became *A Star Is Born*.”
Their collaboration on the 1976 remake of *A Star Is Born* became a career-defining moment for both. Streisand starred as Esther Hoffman, a rising singer, while Kristofferson portrayed troubled rock star John Norman Howard, a role that earned him a Golden Globe for Best Actor. Their chemistry brought depth to the film, with Streisand’s performance solidifying her as a dual force in both music and cinema.
The duo also performed the film’s love theme, “Evergreen,” written by Streisand, which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song. “In the movie, Kris and I sang ‘Evergreen,’ the song I’d written for the film’s main love theme,” Streisand recalled, cherishing their musical partnership.
Their connection extended beyond the screen, evolving into a lasting friendship. Streisand remembered a special moment from her 2019 concert in London’s Hyde Park, where Kristofferson joined her on stage for a performance of their duet “Lost Inside of You.” “He was as charming as ever, and the audience showered him with applause. It was a joy to see him receive the recognition and love he deserved,” she shared.
Kristofferson’s transition from a celebrated country music star to an acclaimed actor was fully realized in *A Star Is Born*, a film that further cemented his legacy. By the time he took on the role of John Norman Howard, Kristofferson had already established himself in the music world with hits like “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down.”
Streisand concluded her tribute with a message of sympathy for Kristofferson’s family, especially his wife of 40 years, Lisa. “My thoughts are with Kris’ wife, Lisa, who supported him in every way,” she wrote.
Kristofferson’s illustrious career saw him secure 19 entries on the Billboard 200, including the No. 1 *A Star Is Born* soundtrack with Streisand. His contributions to country music and songwriting, including classics like “For the Good Times” and “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” made him a legend in his own right.
