Evacuations Ordered as Lake Lure Dam Faces Imminent Failure

Urgent Evacuation Ordered for Residents Below Lake Lure Dam

Rutherford County, N.C. (WSPA) – Authorities in Rutherford County have issued an urgent evacuation order for all residents located downstream of the Lake Lure Dam, as the potential for dam failure is deemed “imminent.” Residents are advised to seek higher ground immediately.

As of 1:30 p.m., emergency management officials reported that water was spilling over the dam and flowing around its side walls. While the dam is currently holding, structural supports have been compromised, raising significant concerns for safety.

Evacuation sirens have been activated in areas downstream of the dam, and emergency personnel are actively going door to door to ensure that all residents are aware of the evacuation order and are evacuating safely.

Evacuees are being directed to temporary shelter at the Ingles grocery store in Lake Lure. Additionally, an emergency shelter has been established at R-S Central High School for those in need of a more secure refuge.

Officials are urging individuals not within the evacuation zone to remain at home to avoid hazardous conditions on the roads. The situation is evolving, and public safety remains the top priority as emergency management continues to monitor the dam's condition.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels for updates on the situation and further instructions.
