SNL' Returns with Jim Gaffigan as Tim Walz, Dana Carvey as President Biden
"Saturday Night Live" kicked off its 50th season with a star-studded premiere, diving straight into the 2024 presidential election with a flurry of new impressions.
The opening sketch featured Jim Gaffigan as Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Andy Samberg as second gentleman Douglas Emhoff, and Dana Carvey reprising his role as President Joe Biden. Maya Rudolph returned as Vice President Kamala Harris, leading a campaign rally in a swing state, after becoming the Democratic presidential nominee during the "SNL" hiatus following Biden’s exit from the race.
Rudolph's Harris began the spoof by joking, “Well, well, well, look who fell out of that coconut tree.” She continued with, "My campaign is like the Sabrina Carpenter song 'Espresso.' The lyrics are vague, but the vibe slaps."
Gaffigan's Walz entered with high energy, excited to reveal himself as Harris’ running mate after Steve Martin reportedly declined. “I haven’t been this excited since I got a 10% rebate on a leaf blower from Menards!” he exclaimed, proudly proclaiming his “Big Dad Energy.”
Samberg debuted his impression of Emhoff, Harris’ husband, describing himself as “Charlie Brown if he was a grown-up,” and expressing excitement to decorate the White House for Hanukkah.
The sketch shifted to Donald Trump’s rally, where James Austin Johnson’s Trump introduced Bowen Yang as his running mate, Sen. JD Vance. “People are saying he was a bad pick, and in many ways, he was,” Johnson’s Trump quipped, followed by Yang’s Vance lamenting that Trump treats him like a son: "I don’t like you, and I’m stuck with you."
Dana Carvey capped off the sketch as President Joe Biden, delivering his signature humor. “A lot of people forget I’m president, including me,” Carvey joked, perfectly capturing Biden’s mannerisms and catchphrases. When Harris thanked him for stepping aside, he retorted, “I didn’t want to! You made me!”
