Rain was in the forecast in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but Alabama football came prepared.
The Crimson Tide incorporated wet ball drills throughout the week leading up to their game against LSU, with a special focus on early practices. "What I loved about our guys was how proactive they were," Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer shared. "We found all kinds of ways to get water on the ball."
Alabama’s approach included wetting arms, bodies, and hands during practice, ensuring players were ready for slippery conditions. This preparation paid off as Alabama dominated LSU 42-13 at Tiger Stadium. The victory boosted No. 11 Alabama (7-2, 4-2 SEC) in its push for a College Football Playoff spot, while LSU (6-3, 3-2) struggled with turnovers.
DeBoer noted the enthusiasm his players showed in preparing for the rain. "Our running backs and receivers were eager, reaching out their hands to get them wet," he said. "They embraced the challenge rather than seeing it as a hassle."
Rain arrived early in the game, but Alabama’s training gave them the edge. LSU struggled with ball handling, losing the turnover battle 3-0. The first LSU turnover occurred when Alabama’s Jihaad Campbell blitzed up the middle, causing LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier to fumble. Defensive lineman Tim Smith quickly recovered the loose ball.
Alabama continued to pressure LSU, adding two interceptions in the second half, while the Crimson Tide’s offense remained turnover-free.
“We were prepared for it,” DeBoer emphasized. “Not a single turnover on our side, and that’s a huge part of why we won. Our ball security was right where it needed to be.”
